Day 3

Friday, February 16th

Mark 1:16-20

Take a few deep breaths to center your heart and your mind as you prepare to meet with God.

Meditation on God

"For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will find it." (Matthew 16:25)

What does it look like to follow Jesus without hesitation?

Teaching

"As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” At once they left their nets and followed him.

When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him." (Mark 1:16-20)

I want to highlight a word that's used here. The phrase without delay is used to describe how Jesus called Simon and Andrew. A few verses earlier we see the phrase “at once” used to describe how the fishermen left their nets to follow Jesus. The Greek word used here is “euthus” (you thea os). This word is used many times in the Gospel according to Mark and it means immediately or straightaway. These fishermen heard the call of Jesus and they followed immediately they followed straightaway and they followed without hesitation leaving their nets and leaving their families behind.

In our own lives, we are met with crossroad-type moments. Whether it be the decision to buy a stranger's lunch or not or give your time to a good organization or good cause maybe there is an overdue apology or maybe like we will see later in Mark’s Gospel it's selling everything you own.

My prayer is that when we hear the call of Jesus, we follow without hesitation, regardless of whether what we are being called to do is big or is small, and no matter the cost.

Examination

Take just a moment to ponder some things you feel Jesus is calling you to do.

Memory Verse

As we go through this week lets keep this verse close to our hearts and remember how the fishermen responded to the call of Jesus.

"At once they left their nets and followed him." (Mark 1:18)
