Psalm 37:7, NIV
Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him.
"What do I do in my time with God?"
Some typical things are read your Bible, pray, maybe read a devotional. But whatever you do, make sure you take some time to do nothing.
Yep. Nothing
Just like the verse says, be still and wait; wait for God. It's not waiting for Him to arrive, He's already there. It's waiting for Him because He wants you to wait. Why?
Being still and waiting helps you focus on God's presence. Be still, and intentionally drive everything else out of your mind, until all that is on your mind is God. Being still helps you to be aware, fully aware, of God's presence. (Gen. 28:16)
In this moment nothing is more important than being with God. Waiting is a way to honor God. As you spend time in stillness, waiting for God, you shut out all the voices and tasks clamoring for your attention, and you choose to give all your attention to God. You make God your priority. "Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and You are exalted as head above all." (1 Chronicles 29:11)
While there are many things we can do to contribute to our spiritual growth, real growth can only come through the work of the Holy Spirit. Being still is yielding to the Holy Spirit, and allowing Him to do the work He needs to do in your heart.
Have you ever tried to feed, bathe, or dress a child who was more interested in playing than in eating, bathing, or dressing? That's why God wants you to be still and wait. So stop wiggling. Be still, and let your Father feed you, bathe you, and dress you. When you let Him get you ready for the day, your day will go much better.
Think about it...
Welcome to the DMV (Divine Molding of Values). Please take a number and wait. Fortunately, with God you're always first in line. Here are some "waiting" verses; pick one and write it down, or mark it in your Bible, and use it to remind yourself to spend some time waiting for God.
